In a nutshell
Whether a voucher behind a door is taxable for an employee depends on the country: the IRS says gift cards are never excludable as a de minimis benefit, however small (Publication 15-B, 2026); GOV.UK allows trivial benefits of £50 or less that are not cash or a cash voucher; Germany leaves benefits in kind out of account up to 50 euro a month under § 8 EStG.
- US: cash equivalents such as gift certificates and gift cards, “no matter how little”, are never excludable as a de minimis benefit; there is no dollar figure on the page.
- UK: £50 or less to provide, not cash or a cash voucher, not a reward, not in the contract; over £50 the full amount is taxable, not only the excess (GOV.UK and HMRC, read October 26, 2026).
- Germany: benefits in kind stay out of account up to 50 euro in total in a calendar month; vouchers only if given in addition to the wages owed.
- Austria: up to EUR 186 a year per employee, in kind, such as vouchers that cannot be exchanged for money (page updated December 4, 2025).
This page is information, not tax advice. It reports what the official pages say on the dates given and does not apply them to any employer or employee.
A company calendar of 24 doors can hold a quote, a video or a thank-you at no cost, and the company advent calendar page lists 24 such doors. The question on this page starts when a door holds a gift card or a voucher. It is about how the rules are written, for the person in HR or payroll who gets the question, and it is a companion to how to make a digital advent calendar. The maker itself is free, and its doors take text, images, YouTube videos, GIFs and links.
The thresholds, by country
| Country | Rule | Threshold | The official page’s words | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| US | De minimis fringe benefit, IRS Publication 15-B (2026) | No dollar figure | A de minimis benefit is property or service so low in value that accounting for it “would be unreasonable or administratively impracticable”; “Holiday or birthday gifts, other than cash, with a low fair market value (FMV)” are an example; “Cash and cash equivalent fringe benefits (for example, gift certificates, gift cards,” and charge-card use) “no matter how little, are never excludable as a de minimis benefit.” | |
| UK | Trivial benefits, GOV.UK | £50 or less to provide | The benefit is exempt if “it cost you £50 or less to provide”, “it’s not cash or a cash voucher”, “it’s not a reward for their work or performance” and “it’s not in the terms of their contract” | |
| UK | HMRC Employment Income Manual, EIM21865 | £50 | “If the cost of providing the benefit exceeds £50, the full amount is taxable, not just the excess over £50.” | |
| Germany | § 8 Abs. 2 Satz 11 EStG | 50 euro per calendar month | Benefits in kind “bleiben außer Ansatz” (stay out of account) if the advantages “insgesamt 50 Euro im Kalendermonat nicht übersteigen”; vouchers and money cards “bleiben nur dann außer Ansatz, wenn sie zusätzlich zum ohnehin geschuldeten Arbeitslohn gewährt werden” (only if given in addition to the wages already owed) | |
| Austria | Gifts to staff, Unternehmensserviceportal | EUR 186 per employee a year | “Es dürfen jährlich maximal 186 Euro pro Beschäftigter/Beschäftigtem für Geschenke ausgegeben werden”; the gifts must be in kind, “zum Beispiel Gutscheine, die nicht in Geld umgetauscht werden können”; they may not be paid out in cash, and must be given to all staff on a specific occasion |
Read October 26, 2026: IRS Publication 15-B (2026), no release date shown on the page; GOV.UK and HMRC; the statute text of § 8 EStG on gesetze-im-internet.de. The Austrian page carries “Letzte Aktualisierung: 4. Dezember 2025”. These are one country’s rules each. The US page is the federal rule only, and the pages read here say nothing about state, cantonal or other national rules, or about Switzerland.
Good to know In the UK, the full amount is taxable if the cost goes over £50, not only the part above it. The German text is written as a condition: the benefits stay out of account if the total does not exceed 50 euro in the month. It is a threshold, not a 50-euro allowance taken off a larger amount.
What it means for 24 small doors
Germany: one month, one total. The 50 euro is counted “insgesamt” (in total) in a calendar month. A December calendar puts all 24 doors in one month. As arithmetic, a voucher of EUR 2 behind every door totals EUR 48; a voucher of EUR 3 behind every door totals EUR 72, which is over the line. The text also asks that vouchers be given in addition to the wages owed.
UK: the cost of each benefit. GOV.UK tests whether the benefit “cost you £50 or less to provide”. The HMRC manual says where a benefit consists of more than one item the cost is the total cost, that the test is the cost of providing the benefit to each employee, not the employer’s overall cost, and that separate top-ups of one gift card are treated as a single benefit with the costs added. Neither page says whether 24 vouchers given through one calendar are one benefit or 24, so this page does not say.
US: the cash-equivalent line. Publication 15-B sets no dollar threshold. Its line for gift cards is that they are cash equivalents and never excludable as de minimis, “no matter how little”. The page’s example of a de minimis gift is a holiday gift other than cash, with a low fair market value.
Austria: a yearly sum. The limit is EUR 186 per employee per year. As arithmetic, 24 vouchers of EUR 7 total EUR 168; 24 of EUR 8 total EUR 192.
None of the pages above says how to treat a gift that arrives as a code inside a link. They speak of cash, cash equivalents, cash vouchers and vouchers that cannot be exchanged for money, and each has its own line on what counts.
Non-cash alternatives
The pages read here describe the non-cash side in these words: “holiday or birthday gifts, other than cash, with a low fair market value” in the US, benefits that are “not cash or a cash voucher” in the UK, “Sachbezüge” (benefits in kind) in Germany and “Sachzuwendungen” in Austria. A specific item given in person or sent by post, such as a book or a plant, is the kind of thing that wording describes. The passages quoted above do not mention experiences or time off, so this page states no tax treatment for them; that is a question for the company’s payroll or tax adviser. Each of these is also a text door that costs the calendar nothing: the door says what is coming, and the item arrives another way.
In the tool The maker’s doors hold text, an image, a YouTube video, a GIF or a link, and each door opens on its date. A door is a message, not a payment: put “check your email” in the door and send any voucher to the one person it is for. Anyone who has the calendar’s link can open it, so a claimable code never goes in a door. The edit link in your inbox opens the calendar for changes.
Put it in a calendar
The template for a team has 24 doors for a remote team with no vouchers in it. Copy it, change the names, and keep any gift outside the calendar. Or start empty: Create your calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an employee gift card taxable?
In the US, Publication 15-B says gift cards are cash-equivalent fringe benefits that are “never excludable as a de minimis benefit”, no matter how little. Whether another exclusion applies is outside the pages read here. In the UK a trivial benefit cannot be cash or a cash voucher. In Germany vouchers stay out of account only within 50 euro a month and only in addition to wages.
What is the UK trivial benefit limit?
£50 or less to provide, per GOV.UK, and the benefit must not be cash or a cash voucher, a reward for work or performance, or in the terms of the contract.
What happens if a UK gift costs more than £50?
HMRC’s manual says the full amount is taxable, not just the excess over £50.
How much can a German employer give in vouchers?
The statute says benefits in kind stay out of account if they do not exceed 50 euro in total in a calendar month, and vouchers only if granted in addition to the wages owed.
Is Austria's limit per month or per year?
Per year: EUR 186 per employee, on the Unternehmensserviceportal page updated December 4, 2025.
Do 24 small gifts add up?
In Germany the 50 euro is counted in total in a calendar month. In the UK the manual totals the items of one benefit and counts separate gift-card top-ups as one benefit. The US page sets no dollar figure.
Can I put a voucher code behind a door of the calendar?
Anyone who has the calendar’s link can open it, so send a code only to the person it is for, outside the calendar.
